Only a few decades ago, dairy cows were once favoured for their ability to produce milk.
Now, thanks to animal activists, dairy farming is made infamous for its horror stories of abuse and animal cruelty.
At least, that’s what these people want you to believe.
One particular claim is that “dairy is rape.” In other words, they claim that dairy cows are sexually abused and forcibly impregnated so that you can drink their milk.
Animal activists and their fellow organizations provide proof of this as such:
When a human is forcibly and involuntarily violated sexually, it’s called “rape.” When animals on factory farms are forcibly and involuntary violated sexually, it’s called “artificial insemination.”
[…]
In order to force them to produce as much milk as possible, farmers typically impregnate cows every year using a device that the industry calls a “rape rack.” To impregnate a cow, a person jams his or her arm far into the cow’s rectum in order to locate and position the uterus and then forces an instrument into her vagina. The cow is defenseless [sic] to stop this violation.
– From PETA.org (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals): “Is Your Food a Product of Rape?“
Joey: “..and when she can’t produce milk anymore, she’s murdered for her body, okay? Her mother…”
Host 1: “And so, the rape is the insemination?”
Joey: “Well, it’s forcible impregnation, isn’t it? If it was any… it’s, it’s the victim… if it was a human being we’d call it, what? What would we call it?”
Host 1 & 2: [after an awkward moment of silence] “[But it’s] it’s not a human being, it’s a cow… “
Joey: “It’s forcible… it’s sexual abuse…”

There’s a lot behind all of this that I cannot put into one article, as it would make it way too long. However, these claims have much to do with the methods employed to breed cows so that they can:
- “Continue” producing milk every year
- Produce potential replacement females to replace older females who get culled or die of illness.
Dairy cattle are bred annually. Artificial insemination (AI) is the most popular method most dairies prefer over natural breeding. (“Natural breeding” means using bulls to impregnate cows to produce offspring.)
Dairies choose AI over bulls because dairy bulls are incredibly unpredictable and dangerous. They may also hurt cows during mating.
AI’ing cows involves inserting one’s whole arm inside the cow’s rectum to guide the tip of the AI gun (a small, long metal rod inserted into the vagina) to the cow’s uterus to deposit bull semen. This is a veterinary medical procedure akin to a human female seeing a gynecologist and getting her version of in-utero insemination (IUI, which is… AI in humans).
However, animal activists see AI as a cruel, unnecessary, harmful and highly invasive tool. Most don’t even see it as a tool; most see it as a form of sexual exploitation. They believe it is a direct violation of a cow’s bodily autonomy for what she would prefer if she wanted to get pregnant and have a calf.
Thus, they argue that AI is a form of rape. No consent, they claim, is provided by the cow and, since rape is a form of dominance and control in all legal cases–far and beyond the one-sided sexual gratification by the perpetrator–activists assert the same can be said for cows.
As we’ll discuss in other articles below, AI is anything but a form of rape. As mentioned above, it is a veterinary medical procedure very similar to IUI in humans. Also, while cows are wholly unaware of the concept of consent, they are artificially inseminated when they are in heat.
When cows are in heat, their hormones overpower their mental state, making them quite focused on finding a way to get pregnant. If a bull were available, they would stand willingly to be bred. However, AI is the best solution since bulls are extremely dangerous on dairy farms. Cows, not understanding humans, need to be captured by head-catch to be bred for both their safety and the safety of the person doing the procedure.
Activists dig this whole “rape” hole much deeper by seeing AI in a perverted, nefarious manner: they believe that the farmer (or even AI technician) gets some form of sexual gratification when performing AI on a cow. Make that… every single cow, if there’s more than one that needs their attention.
Wowzers, activists.
To be real, it’s really difficult to get this kind of experience when one’s arm, and not their penis, is inside a cow’s rectum, and their other hand and arm are busy trying to gently maneuver a thin, long, metal rod into the vagina, through the cervix and slightly into the uterus. Doing so takes a lot of concentration. It’s funny because this level of concentration doesn’t make room for such perversive thoughts as these wrong-headed activists claim exist.
We will explore all of these in greater detail in the articles below.
But clearly, they’re trying to incite strong negative emotions by making such disgusting statements. That’s how activist propaganda works.
And there lies the problem. Activists are striving to get you scared, angry and disgusted about the abuse and cruelty that dairy cows are allegedly being subjected to. The facts matter very little to them except to appease their objective of turning people away from consuming anything dairy–or any animal products, for that matter.
Naturally, they’ll tell you the exact opposite: that the facts are in their favour, that they’re telling the truth, and people like me are playing on your emotions and lack facts and logic.
Let’s be honest. If the facts were genuinely in their favour, they wouldn’t quickly take offence and attack you personally when you question their copy-pasta drivel of “dairy is rape” or “cows are raped, and their babies stolen and murdered so you can enjoy their secretions for your taste pleasure.“
Instead, they’d do away with the emotional tactics and give you the facts as to why and how they believe dairy cows are being mistreated and abused. They’d be as factual, honest, and tactful as dairy farmers like IowaDairyFarmer, TDF Honest Farming, etc., always, always “seem” to be every single time they post a video to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
But we all know they’re very rarely like that. Very rarely. And that’s saying something.
So please, don’t believe their lies. They’re lying that cows are sexually abused for milk. Cows are treated very well from start to end in the milk production line. They’re rarely treated otherwise.
Often, activists bring up the rare cases and point out, “This is what happens to cows in the entire dairy industry! And you still like your milk, cheese, and ice cream, huh?? Harrummph!!” The big problem is that people who don’t know any better lap it all up and believe it. They are fully unaware that these exemplary occurrences are distinct rarities, not commonalities.
Why? Because it doesn’t fit into the activists’ dogma. They’d sooner capitalize on the public’s blatant yet innocent ignorance of farming practices than humbly tell them the truth. It better suits them to lie by omission when their mission is to make as many people vegan—and turn those people into animal activists themselves—as possible by telling as awful of stories as possible. Make sense?
“But hold on one second! You didn’t go into a lot of detail; You didn’t do much debunking about things like rape racks, murder of baby calves, and so on!!”
I know. I know. I did that on purpose.
See, I have (had… -ish) a nasty habit of writing an entire book that can take a person a very, very long time to read. Today’s population wants to spend only a few minutes reading, then move on with their lives.
They DON’T want to spend 20 minutes reading a lot of content that contains so much detail it could fill five to ten two-page, two-minute-read articles.
So, I’m cutting this down a lot. This article was just an introduction, the kind of go-to article that I can go back to if anyone has any questions or wants to challenge me with their usual activist bullshit.
As such, as a go-to article, I attach links to related articles that debunk many—if not all—of the activist claims surrounding ruminant reproduction, artificial insemination, the human-animal interactive bond, and dairy farming.
